‘Jars’ – small collage paintings

Series of small mixed media collage paintings using the grey printed tissue paper that is in this previous post.

I would like to share some progress shots of a series of mixed media paintings I am working on where I used printed tissue paper to create a base. I printed the tissue paper using water soluble oil paint and scrunched it to create various textures. Tissue paper is a wonderful medium which I find particularly useful due to it’s transparent qualities. The inconvenience is that it is very fragile and can’t be handled much once wet or glued.

  • I used thick grey card for the bases, onto which I roughly painted some gesso. I tore pieces of the tissue paper small enough to still see parts of the card and gesso paint.  The base grey colour of the card allows the white paint to be visible, and the white gives contrast to the marks of the printed tissue.

  • I then added printed words and grey pigment to some of the card bases. The words come from the preserving jars used here in France.

  • The next two photos show added coloured tissue, stenciled words and printed lines. The lines are applied using what I call ‘line transfer technique’, which comes from monotype printmaking and is an extension to the transfer/trace/direct drawing technique. However there are only six card pieces in this photo. I think this was because I thought I would complete these for the Swiss project I was preparing for in November, and it didn’t work out that way.

These two photos show the stages where I have added more collage and line as images or words.

  • And here are the final results of two of the card bases – so six more to complete,  all to do with preserving jars and jam jars.
